Concerns As Lassa Fever Kill 172, Infect 924 People Across 21 States
In 2025, Lassa fever has claimed 172 lives in Nigeria, with 924 confirmed cases across 21 states and 106 Local Government Areas, according to the NCDC. The case fatality rate has increased to 18.6% compared to last year. Five states – Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi – account for 90% of confirmed cases. The majority of cases are within the 21-30 age group, with a slightly higher prevalence among males. While no new healthcare worker infections were reported, the NCDC emphasizes the need for continuous state-level preparedness, including enhanced surveillance, rodent control, and public sensitization, particularly in high-burden areas, as Lassa fever remains endemic. Early detection and prompt treatment are crucial to reducing fatalities.
