PDP Governors Pick Turaki As Consensus Chairman Amid Protests
PDP Governors and a faction of the NWC have selected Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as consensus national chairman, sparking internal conflict ahead of the November convention. Governors Bala Mohammed, Seyi Makinde, and Ahmadu Fintiri spearheaded the move, with Makinde also backing Taofeek Arapaja for National Secretary. Nyesom Wike criticized the lack of consultation, while Northcentral leaders want the position zoned to their region. The Southeast House caucus threatens a convention boycott if the Women Leader position isn't zoned to them. Other candidates, including Sule Lamido, oppose the consensus and insist on an election. According to a chieftain from the Northwest, Umar Sani, those opposed to the choice of Turaki are those bent on destabilizing the party for selfish and personal gains. A 13-man Screening Committee will vet NWC aspirants, while dissent continues regarding the selection process and regional representation.
