Why I accepted National Theatre renaming in my honour — Wole Soyinka
Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka accepted the renaming of Nigeria's National Theatre after him due to its impressive transformation from a dilapidated state. Speaking at the recommissioning ceremony, which coincided with Nigeria's Independence Day, Soyinka admitted his initial reservations, citing his past criticism of naming public monuments after individuals. He highlighted the building's history, including near-electrocution experiences and its architectural shortcomings. However, the extensive renovations financed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers' Committee, including modern upgrades and restored artworks, changed his mind. The event, attended by President Tinubu and Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu, emphasized national unity and projecting Nigeria's positive image. Soyinka ultimately conceded, feeling "ambushed" but also a sense of ownership, viewing the gesture as a lasting legacy that doesn't involve monetary cost.
