Beyond the Wound: Nigerian women bearing the weight of infertility stigma
In Nigeria, infertility carries a heavy social stigma, particularly for women, who often face blame, ridicule, and isolation when they cannot conceive. Studies estimate that between 20 and 30 percent of married couples are affected by infertility issues. While medical science acknowledges both male and female factors, cultural biases often place the onus on women. This leads to emotional distress, community withdrawal, and delayed access to appropriate medical care as many couples turn to traditional or religious remedies first. The cost of treatments like IVF is prohibitive for most, creating a “medical poverty trap”. Organizations are emerging to offer support, education, and financial assistance to couples navigating infertility, aiming to challenge stigma and promote understanding.
