Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining and one other charged with illegal mining offences

Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, along with Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining, have been charged with six counts related to illegal mining activities. The charges include assigning mineral rights without approval and facilitating unlicensed mining operations, violating the Minerals and Mining Act. Wontumi appeared in court to face the charges. The case stems from a police operation in Samreboi in April 2025, where 29 people were arrested within Akonta Mining's concession, and various mining equipment and assets were seized. The State plans to seek forfeiture of the seized items following the trial. Kwame Antwi, co-accused and Director of Akonta Mining, is currently at large.
