Senegal’s Dakar Refinery Turns To Nigeria For Crude Oil Supply – Report

Senegal's Dakar refinery, designed for lighter crude, cannot process its own Sangomar oil (medium-sour grade). It currently relies on Nigeria's Erha crude for its 30,000 barrel per day processing capacity. While Senegal exports almost all of its Sangomar crude to Europe, it heavily imports refined fuels, mostly from Russia, to meet domestic demand. This reliance on foreign supplies creates a paradox for the oil-exporting nation. Furthermore, the Dangote refinery in Nigeria now relies on American crude to sustain production, which highlights a crude oil supply problem in West Africa as a whole. The problem will persist in Senegal as Sangomar’s Phase 2 development is slated to maintain current crude production.
