Nigerian CSOs condemn UN’s proposal to dismantle UNAIDS
A coalition of Nigerian civil society organizations has strongly condemned the UN Secretary-General's proposal to dismantle UNAIDS by the end of 2026, as part of the UN80 reform initiative. They argue this move is ill-timed and a betrayal of millions affected by HIV, particularly in Nigeria, which has the second-largest HIV epidemic globally. The coalition fears dismantling UNAIDS will reverse significant progress in reducing HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths, undermine donor confidence, and silence the voices of vulnerable communities. They question the UN's commitment to ending AIDS by 2030 and urge the UN to reject the proposal and instead strengthen UNAIDS' mandate, emphasizing its crucial role in coordinating the global HIV response and prioritizing community leadership.
