Why We Backed Obasanjo For President In 1999 – Sule Lamido

In his autobiography, Sule Lamido reveals the strategic rationale behind the PDP's decision to support Olusegun Obasanjo for president. According to Lamido, the PDP sought a Yoruba leader who could act as a unifying figure for Nigeria, not just a representative of the Yoruba ethnicity. While figures like Olu Falae, Bola Ige, and Abraham Adesanya were considered, Obasanjo's military background, national profile, and perceived patriotism in handing over power to Shehu Shagari in 1979 made him the preferred choice. Lamido acknowledged that this decision angered some Yoruba leaders, particularly due to Obasanjo's perceived betrayal of MKO Abiola and the June 12 election. Ultimately, the PDP believed Obasanjo's credentials were vital for stabilizing the country.
