Ogun State Announces Lassa Fever Outbreak, Confirms Death

Ogun State, Nigeria, has declared a Lassa fever outbreak following the death of a 25-year-old NYSC member on March 18, 2025. The victim, who fell ill in Ondo State, was brought to a secondary health facility in Ijebu North LGA before passing away the same day. The Commissioner of Health listed symptoms of the viral hemorrhagic fever to include high fever, headache, body weakness, sore throat, muscle pain, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pain and unexplained bleeding. Residents are urged to report suspected cases to government health facilities immediately, particularly if fever doesn't respond to malaria or antibiotic treatment within 48 hours. Healthcare facilities are advised to enhance infection control and contact the local disease surveillance officer. The Ogun State government is actively monitoring the situation and collaborating with a rapid response team for enhanced surveillance and community engagement.
